Writing Strategies to Use at Home

  • Write from left to right.
  • Use a finger to space words.
  • Think about what the word looks like.
  • Think about whether the word is a long or short word
  • Stretch out the word and saying it slowly to listen to the sounds.
  • Think about the letters that could represent those sounds.
  • Write the beginning, middle, and ending sounds that you hear.
  • Think about other words you know. Is this word anything like another word you know?
  • Use the knowledge of word families.
  • Use books or magazines to find words.
  • Point to each word as you read your writing with an adult.
  • Ask yourself, “Does my story make sense?”
